Short, plain-English guides to help you read a race for yourself.
1. Reading a racecard
Each runner's line shows recent form figures (e.g. 1-32), age, weight, jockey, trainer and draw. A dash separates seasons.
2. The going
From Firm to Heavy. Some horses love soft ground, others need a quick surface – check past form on similar going.
3. Trainer and jockey patterns
Form in yards runs in cycles. Recent strike rates can be a useful clue (always check the source).
