Today's key runners

  • Kabral du Mathan · 13:25 Perth

The most interesting run of the day: Dan Skelton's OR 156 hurdler makes his chasing debut in a four-runner beginners' chase over 2m. He is rated well clear of his rivals (Jabbar 132, Hold The Serve 130, Dream Shadow 126), and his last three runs read 1-1-4, so on ability he is the one they all have to beat. The questions are fitness after 217 days off and how he takes to fences on soft ground, as a small field can make for a tactical race. Our view: watch his jumping in the first half of the race, because a fluent, accurate round would mark him out as a novice chaser to follow this season.

  • Major Fortune · 14:30 Perth

A seasonal return over 3m for a horse who ended last season in good form, with recent figures of 8-1-2-2-1 off a current mark of 127. He has been off for 194 days, and this is a competitive six-runner handicap where Thunder Rock (128) and Chasingouttheblues (125, form 1-2-1-1-5) are rated within a few pounds. Soft ground over a stamina trip will test his fitness, so how he finishes the race matters more than the result itself. Our view: Dan Skelton and Harry Skelton team up, and this is a useful guide to how far he can climb the handicap from here.

  • Nikolavs Otto · 13:55 Perth

A lightly raced Dan Skelton newcomer who has run only once, finishing second and now runs in this 2m maiden hurdle. He is by Walk In The Park, and his yard has sent six runners to Perth for the day, which shows the yard means business at this meeting. Soft ground and a ten-runner field will be a good test of his experience, with the more seasoned Sea Eagle (OR 118, second 17 days ago) the obvious reference point. Our view: look for whether he jumps the hurdles cleanly and travels with the pace, since a promising debut over hurdles would put him on the list for better races.

Tomorrow's key runners

  • Getawhisky · 14:37 Uttoxeter

Dan Skelton's mare makes her chasing debut after 209 days off, and her stable has said she has schooled well over fences and that mares' novice chases are her aim this season. Over hurdles she won a Class 2 mares' novice over two miles at Windsor in January and was fifth, beaten about two lengths, in a Grade 2 at Newbury on her last start, running off a mark of 119. Two miles on good ground looks a sensible starting point, and the yard is in strong form with 16 winners from 73 runners in the last fortnight. The big test is Folie Golith, rated 137 and already experienced over fences in France, so this is a proper introduction rather than an easy one. Our view: watch how quickly she settles into a rhythm at her fences, because a clean round would put her among the mares' novice chasers to follow.

  • Folie Golith · 14:37 Uttoxeter

She ran three times over fences at Auteuil this spring and was second twice, including a narrow defeat in a Listed chase in April, always on very soft or heavy ground. Good ground at Uttoxeter is a sharp change from those testing conditions, although as a four-year-old she carries 10st 9lb, 9lb less than Getawhisky. Harry Cobden rides, and the main question is whether her French form translates to a two-mile British beginners' chase on a quicker surface. Our view: if she shows the same level here she sets a high standard for the mares' novice chase division this season.

  • Turbocharged · 13:27 Uttoxeter

Dan Skelton's bumper winner makes his hurdling debut after 225 days off in a two-mile novices' hurdle that should tell us a lot about his jumping. He was third on his debut at Newbury last November and then won a Haydock bumper in March on good to soft ground, and Harry Skelton, who rode him at Newbury, is back on board. Two miles on good ground is similar to the conditions of his win, and his stable's 16 winners from 73 runners in the past two weeks show it is in strong form. The most experienced rival is Supreme George, who won three handicap chases last winter and is rated 107 over hurdles, so the yardstick is a seasoned handicapper rather than another newcomer. Our view: watch how he meets the first few hurdles and whether he settles, because a smooth debut would mark him out as a novice hurdler to follow.
